The goals of the summer camp are for students to build enthusiasm and experience with science through field-based investigations, learn to communicate scientific findings, and, in the process, develop college and career readiness. During a week on the Elon University campus, students observe, describe, and collect insects from different kinds of ecosystems (e.g. forest, field, stream) in the North Carolina Piedmont.
In addition to field experiences, students make museum-style insect collections that they will keep. Students also develop college and career readiness by engaging in campus-based summer programming with Elon’s Office of Admissions, interacting with high school students engaged in pre-college programming (Elon Academy), and meeting Elon student researchers in the Undergraduate Research Program.
The week-long immersive summer program culminates with participants giving presentations on their learning.
